A joint win for Tampere at Seoul in Human-Centered Smart City category

Collaboration between Tampere, Nokia Arena and LG won the Human-Centered Smart City category award at Seoul's Smart City Gala with a solution that enhances the visitor experience at Nokia Arena through LG's smart displays.

Citiverse

Seoul’s competition described a human-centered city as implementing digital equality in its projects and actively addressing digital inequality.

The vision was that the arena would also serve as an international innovation and testing platform for companies, with social human-centeredness as the focus instead of just technology.

Her work radiates warmth, courage and the beauty of individuality.

Her art and stories celebrate diversity, inclusivity, empathy and belonging.

Tove Jansson is best known as the beloved creator of the Moomins.

She created the enchanting Moominvalley as a counterbalance to the horrors
of war. The stories celebrate diversity and equality, embracing the differences among the characters. In the Moomin world, even the smallest creature matters.  Warmth, acceptance and friendship ensure that everyone feels welcome in the Moominhouse.

As a Guest In The Moomin House

An immersive VR experience in the "jewel" of the Moomin Museum collection

The Moominhouse (1979) is a unique masterpiece of imagination, play, and creativity by Tove Jansson, Tuulikki Pietilä, and Pentti Eistola. Almost every visitor to the Moomin Museum in Tampere sighs when they see the museum’s centrepiece: if only I could step inside! With VR glasses, visitors can now explore the Moominhouse themselves.

The Moominhouse symbolises everything essential in the Moomin stories:
everyone is welcome, everyone is cared for, and everyone is accepted just as
they are. This message is as timely in Tampere as it is internationally.

Enter the CitiVerse: Experience, Understand and Shape Your City

Her city’s history comes alive

Ella, a 13-year-old from Tampere, struggled to stay engaged in history class—until a visit to Tampere Cathedral changed everything. Through a mixed-reality guide, she witnessed what around 1,700 civilians lived through in 1918, walking their routes, hearing their stories, and seeing the city as they did. She left moved, empathetic, and genuinely connected to her city’s past—turning history into her favourite subject. Illustrative use case from Tampere. Discover more stories at xcitecitiverse.eu.

What is x-CITE?

x-CITE (Expanding the Experience of Citizens through Extended Reality) is a European project that uses immersive technologies to make cities smarter, greener, and more inclusive. By adding a digital interaction layer to urban life, x-CITE helps people engage with their environment in new and meaningful ways.

At the heart of x-CITE is the CitiVerse: an interactive Local Digital Twin of a city, built for citizens. It combines real-time urban data with immersive visualisations to make complex information easier to see, explore and understand. The CitiVerse is not just a digital replica of the city — it is a participatory platform that enables people to co-experience and co-shape their surroundings. With pilots in Tampere, Rotterdam and Flanders
and 12 different use cases, the CitiVerse is being tested in three
real-world domains:

  • Urban planning – Help people shape their city in a simple, visual way, with scenario forecasts on mobility, air quality and noise to support healthier, higher-quality urban life.
  • Culture and tourism – Bring history, art and landmarks to life
    through immersive experiences.
  • Citizen engagement – Enable easy and inclusive participation
    in city decisions.

What Smart City?

In Tampere, we invite residents to participate
in designing the Smart City.

That’s why we’re exploring smart city solutions together with Petra and Tamu – clearly and understandably.

We ask Tampere residents about the kind of smart city they envision and what hopes, concerns, and questions they have regarding smart solutions in the city.

This is possible when we share a common language and understanding of how to leverage data, new technologies and AI.
